Being sensitive to the shocking events of the weekend, I'm sort of at a loss for the preoccupation some folks have for guns. I mean, I have no moral phobia of the things, I shot my share as a boy, but why do you need to have an entire arsenal at your disposal? If they're cool, what's the appeal? That you could kill a bunch of people if the need suddenly arose, or that you could play an important role in the next whiskey rebellion, or perhaps defend house and home when the economy collapses and bandits are trying to take your hard earned stuff. Of course, they wont be be as well armed as you are...
No, this makes no sense at all. They call it an arms race for a reason, and as a nation we're waging a gigantic one with each other which can only end in tragedy. This weekend it did, twice. The argument that 'guns don't kill, people do' is so trivially true that it truly makes no difference. Unfortunately, we have bred enough people to be killers in our society that making it easier for them to get the tools they need to kill seems highly irresponsible.
I understand that Mexican drug lords find getting guns so much easier here than elsewhere in Latin America that they send mules to buy guns here. Think of it, we supply the gun supply for people we're fighting against in the equally absurd 'war on drugs'.
